Questions, answered
The basics of how India’s civil services directory works.
How many IAS officers are there in India?
The official IAS Civil List published by DoPT, as on 1 January 2026, lists 5,755 IAS officers across all cadres.
What is a cadre?
A cadre is the state, or group of states, an officer is allotted to serve in. Most cadres are single states, such as Maharashtra or Gujarat. Some are joint cadres, such as AGMUT (Arunachal Pradesh, Goa, Mizoram and Union Territories, including Delhi) and Assam-Meghalaya.
What is a batch?
The batch is the year an officer was allotted to the service. It is usually the year after they passed the UPSC Civil Services Examination. For example, an officer who cleared the 2009 exam usually belongs to the 2010 batch.
What is the difference between home state and cadre?
The home state is the state the officer comes from, as recorded in official records. The cadre is where they serve. Many officers serve in a cadre outside their home state.
Where does the information on Officerpedia come from?
Only from official Government of India records: the DoPT IAS Civil List and Executive Record Sheets for IAS officers, and the MHA IPS Civil List for IPS officers. Every profile links to its source and shows when the record was last updated.
How can I report a mistake?
Use the Report button on the officer's profile page. We check every request against the official record.
