Our methodology

Officerpedia publishes structured profiles of India's government officers. Every profile is built from public government records, organised the same way for every officer, and read by a person before it goes live. This page explains how we do it, and how you can follow any officer's updates.

Who we cover

We started with IAS officers. IPS officers and officers of other services and departments will follow. Every profile, whatever the service, uses the same structure and goes through the same checks.

1. We start from the public record

Each profile begins with records the Government of India publishes about its officers, such as the service civil lists and each officer's record sheet. Our tools read these records at a gentle pace and keep a copy of what they read, so every detail on a profile can be traced back to where it came from.

2. We organise it the same way for everyone

Every profile has the same sections, in the same order:

  • Present post: designation, department, place, and the date the officer took it up
  • Career history: every posting with its dates, newest first
  • Service details: batch, cadre, home state and mode of recruitment
  • Education, training and awards
  • UPSC rank, only when it can be matched to the officer with certainty

We write out abbreviations, standardise designations and place names, and merge repeated entries so the same posting or degree is never listed twice.

3. Automatic checks flag anything doubtful

Before a person looks at a profile, it goes through automatic checks. Each problem raises a flag, and a profile with an open flag cannot be published. We flag a profile when:

  • the officer's name or date of birth differs between two records
  • a date of birth or home state is missing or not recognised
  • a UPSC rank could not be matched with certainty (we leave a rank out rather than guess)
  • a key post, such as District Collector or Superintendent of Police, is not yet linked to its district
  • a record changes after one of our editors corrected it

If the same officer turns up twice, for example under two spellings of a name, the second entry is set aside so there is only ever one profile per officer.

4. A person checks every profile before it is published

An editor reads each profile exactly as readers will see it, compares it with the record, resolves every flag, and only then publishes it. We publish a limited number of new profiles each day so that each one gets this attention. Nothing is published automatically.

5. We keep profiles up to date

Officers are transferred and promoted often. When an officer's record changes, we update the present post and add the new posting to their career history. If an update touches something an editor corrected by hand, it is flagged and checked again before it appears.

How to track any officer's updates

  • Every profile is dated. Each profile shows when it was last updated and the date of the record it is based on.
  • Career history is in order. Every posting is listed with its dates. A transfer appears as a new entry at the top, and the previous post moves into the history, so you can see the whole career at a glance.
  • Links don't break. Each officer keeps one permanent profile. If a name is corrected or the address changes, the old link redirects to the new one, so bookmarks and shared links keep working.
  • Follow groups of officers. Browse by batch, cadre, home state or key post, for example to see who holds the Collector post in each district now.

Corrections

Every profile has a Report button, and you can also use the correction form. Tell us what is wrong and, if you can, link to the record that shows the right information. We check every request against the official record before changing anything, and we reply by email.

What we don't publish

We don't publish personal contact details, family information, opinions or unverified claims. A profile contains only what an officer's public service record shows.

Independence

Officerpedia is an independent website. It is not a government website and is not connected to any government department. Where a profile differs from the official service record, the official record prevails.
